Greening Your Home Business Tools

I began as a Global Resorts Network Affiliate with only a couple of tools: a computer and a cell phone. I chose a 17” MacBook Pro and an 8GB iPhone. Expensive tools, yes, but worth every penny. Because I also work in video production, the larger 17” screen is great for video editing. Most people do not need something so big and expensive, but I do highly recommend a Mac in a size that is right for your budget. They crash less often than PC’s and are more user friendly. Aesthetically speaking, they are the sexiest, most beautifully designed computers in the world. If you don’t believe me, watch these silly spots here... because they’re funny and will probably make you laugh.

In regards to the iPhone: DO BELIEVE THE HYPE! My iPhone is fantastic for my GRN business. It is very intuitive to use and has fabulous features, like, a great camera, a calendar that syncs to iCal on my laptop, a mail tool, and even, a direct link to YouTube... so you don’t have to type “YouTube.com” into your browser window while you’re driving! I love it! Yes, loving a phone is extreme. However, if I’m going to love a piece of semi-toxic technology, then this is it. Buy one. Buy one. Buy one. Unless you’re not interested in a cell phone at all -- then, hey, more power to you. You can run your GRN business with your land-line at home -- no problem.

Shortly after I began with GRN, I came to realize that there are a few other items that can make one’s work life much easier. Two of these items are headsets -- one for my land-line at home and one for my cell phone. My husband gave them to me as gifts; he picked out the sporty JawBone in red for my iPhone (very cool and easy to wear on my tiny, elfin-like ears), and a simple, yet excellent, headset for my land-line from a company called Plantronics. I recommend them both to you... and I don’t get paid to say so!

In terms of the ever-important eco-mindedness: I have paid in advance for two years of wind power for my iPhone and will renew as soon as the two years are up. At home, my husband and I have opted into a green energy program called New England Green Start, which means that 100% of our payment to our local electric company actually goes toward renewable energy companies. That feels really good!
